7 tips for choosing outfits for family photos
- Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the same outfit, coordinate your outfits to complement each other. Choose a color scheme and select clothing pieces in different shades of that color. This creates a cohesive look without looking too matchy-matchy. I always start with mom first and style everyone around her outfit choice.
- Consider the Location
When choosing what to wear for family photos outside, consider the location and the season. If you’re taking photos at the beach, wear light and airy clothing. Textures like linen and gauze lend themselves to the atmosphere. If you’re taking photos in the woods or the desert during the fall, wear warm, earthy tones. I truly believe neutrals and earth tones are suitable year-round and can be hung in your home without clashing with your decor.
- Layers Are Your Friend
Layers not only add depth and texture to your outfit but can also keep you warm if it’s chilly outside. For example, a denim jacket or a cardigan over a dress can add interest and dimension to your photos. If its a warmer month and you’re hoping to layer consider adding a knit kimono for women or for men a light weight button-down shirt open over a T-shirt.
- Accessorize
Accessories and props can add interest or even tell a story in your photos, they can be the thing that solidifies the vibe you’re going for. For example – a crochet headscarf could create a boho look, a sunhat could add some seasonal whimsy. One of my favorite accessories to shop for is small purses for little girls to carry during a session.
- Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns
Avoid wearing clothing with large logos or busy patterns as they can be distracting in photos. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns instead. Clothing with a lot of writing or a distracting logo can take away from the overall look.
- Movement makes a difference
Photos that are captivating and emotive typically have an element of movement to them. A flowy maxi skirt or dress is flattering and adds beautiful movement to your images.
- Don’t Forget Shoes
I know I know you’re likely not going to show up to your family photos barefoot (unless its a beach session that’s completely expected) But shoes are often an afterthought. Your shoes are just as important as your clothing. Choose shoes that are comfortable and suit your outfit. Avoid wearing flip-flops or sneakers unless they fit the overall aesthetic of your look. Once again large logos, characters and eye-catching colors should be avoided when selecting shoes.
